Course Registrations
Core Selections
Students who have started their freshman year in Fall 2005 and later must choose their core courses from the Social & Cultural Studies/Historical Studies (HIST/SOCI) and the Literature & Thought (LITR/PHIL) programs. Students except Engineering students must also choose one core course from the Science (SCI) program.
Two courses, not from the same program, from Social & Cultural Studies or Historical Studies programs.
One course from the Literature & Thought or Philosophy programs.
If students fail from the core selected courses, they can take another course from the same program instead.
The course lists and selection dates for the core courses are determined and announced by the Registrar’s Office.
Engineering students who have started their freshman year before Fall 2005 will be placed by the Registrar’s Office to their HSS (“SOCI 100”, “PSYC 100”, “PHIL 202”) courses according to their previously made selections. Engineering students who have not made selections or would like to alter their selections must apply to the Registrar’s Office with an Add-Drop Form signed by their advisors.
Core courses without selections and required area courses are assigned by the Registrar’s Office.
Pre-Registration Period
Dates for pre-registration and registration are announced by Registrar’s Office during the previous semester.
During the pre-registration period, students enroll to courses they wish to attend. If the applications exceed the class capacity, the students are placed on waiting lists according to time of registration.
Students can make lecture changes for core courses and required area courses assigned by the Registrar’s Office within the capacities of lectures. There will be no waiting lists for these courses.
At the end of the pre-registration period, deans and faculty members of the courses examine the class lists and make changes they see fit.

- Rules and Regulations Concerning Course Registrations
- The required course load for students per semester is 5 (five) courses. Students of Faculty of Law are required to take 6 (six) courses per semester in their first, third and fourth years.
- Common core and required area courses are assigned to students by the Registrar’s Office. The cases of students on probation are considered by the related Faculty Executive Council and the students may be assigned to repeat courses with D+ and D grades. In that case, the schedule of the students are changed according to the council decision.
- If they wish so, all students are allowed to retake courses they have previously taken and received D+ or D grades. For elective courses students can replace their D+ or D graded courses with another course of the same status.
- Courses that are failed (F graded) must be retaken during the first semester they are offered. Students who have excuses for not taking these courses during the first semester must apply to their faculties.
- If the assigned classes are less than the semester course load, students decide together with their advisors the core, area, area elective and free elective courses they wish to take. Students with a GPA of 3.00 or higher are allowed to take one more course than the normal course load as an overload. Students with a GPA lower than 3.00 who wish to take an extra course must apply to their faculties.
- Students with 6 to 12 courses to graduation are allowed to overload one extra course per semester. Students with 6 to 9 courses to graduation are allowed to underload one course less per semester.
- To drop a core or required area course students must apply to their faculties with a petition also signed by the advisor.
- Communication 101-102 courses must be enrolled consecutively and there is no withdrawal from these courses.
- It is not possible to take a course without fullfiling its prerequisites.
- If a course requires the instructor’s consent, students must bring an ADD-DROP FORM or a COURSE REGISTRATION APPROVAL FORM, signed by the instructor to the Registrar’ Office.
